Rock Star

It has been said that when Lesa is in Nicaragua, she really doesn’t “blend” that well. I mean really, I think the tallest Nicaraguan I have seen on ALL of my trips here has been 5’8” and that was a woman. On average most Nicaraguans are about 5’2” or shorter…with jet black hair and very dark skin! To say Lesa doesn’t blend is an understatement!

And neither does our daughter Lucie!

In fact, Lucie is starting to reach Rock Star status in Nicaragua. I mean everywhere we go, people point, they touch her hair (yes total strangers do this!), and they whisper about her…seriously she might as well be Miley Cyrus with the attention she gets everywhere she goes. Yesterday morning we were at the orphanage…Lucie gets out of the limo…I mean taxi…and the crowd goes crazy. I went to Church in El Canyon and for two hours…yes two hours…I listened to Pastor Josue preach in Spanish. No less than 12 times he said Lucie’s name…ask me IN SPANISH how old Lucie was…Lucie Lucie Lucie! Her momma ran a close second with her name being mentioned at least 8 times! Then the coup de gras was at dinner. The only couple here with a car (Jonathan’s adoptive parents) and another friend Trish with her adoptive daughter, asked Martita, me and the Rock Star to go to dinner…at McDonalds! LOL.

I digress for a minute. Lesa HATES with a capital H, McDonalds. She has even converted me over to the Non Super Size side…but hey, we were in Nicaragua…and what goes on in Nica…stays in Nica?!?!? Anyway, since taking up residence here in Nica, Lesa has NOT been asked to go to McDonalds! Then, less than 48 hours AFTER she leaves the country, WE get asked to have DINNER at McDonalds! Makes me think there really is such a thing as “all on God’s time”!
Okay back to the Rock Star…so we walk into McDonalds which just happens to have a Playland, and immediately, the crowd begins “the stare”. Lucie is once again the center of attention and loving it! We get our Happy Meals…Lucie scarfs it down and asks if she can go to the Playland. Now remember, in Nicaragua you are always just a little on guard from a safety standpoint. You never know when someone might try to take the Rock Star home with them, so I did my fatherly duty and began to scope things out…looking for the exits, the entrances, looking at the people (all of which looked like the “well to do” of Managua…I guess McDonalds on Sunday night is a big night out?), etc. Things looked safe albeit a little crowed…there were about 30 kids in the tunnels, space capsules, slides, etc. I tell Lucie the place is safe and she can go play. Lucie immediately kicks off her shoes, runs across the McDonalds (ugh…sorry Baye, I know this whole running bare foot in a McDonalds is freaking you out) and runs into the crowd of kids disappearing into a tunnel! I was a little freaked out but then it hit me…Lucie is a Rock Star and doesn’t blend at all! And boy did that come in handy! Every few minutes or so I would see this VERY white kid with VERY white hair moving through the apparatus and a feeling of peace would allay my fears…THERE WAS LUCIE! On the other hand? I lost Martita at least 5 times…JUST KIDDING BAYE! She was standing by the two kids that were holding the puppies while they ate Chicken Nuggets. I guess that could be a blog all by itself…yes, puppies in the McDonalds!

Okay…on to full day number 2!

  1. Hi Tim! You're doing a great job blogging. Not quite up to Lesa's level, but very entertaining. (Insert smile icon here.) I am sure that Bill would be very interested to hear about your trip to McD's. (Insert frown icon here.)Take care!

  3. I really don't know where to begin.... yes, it amazes me that after a month in Nicaragua - you have my daughters in McDonald's within 48 hours - I don't think this is a God thing... maybe a Daddy thing?!? ;)

Secondly, our Lucie is a rock star but that doesn't mean that you can check on her every few minutes (in Dad's language - that's about 10 minutes at a time) and be sure she is still in the building!!

What may surprise you - No shoes.... in Nicaragua .... in McDonald's - guess what, not that big of a deal to me anymore - I have grown in knowing that my childrens' feet are ALWAYS filthy in Nicaragua - that's just how it happens no matter where you go -

My final point... losing Martita several times, well that really isn't good my love. Please remember that albeit she blends in with all the others...she is one of us!! ;)
